There are artists who open their studios to you, others who open their bedrooms. With “In My Bed,” his new single, Ed Mount chooses intimacy—but not the kind you might expect. Forget the candlelit ballad: here, the bed is a miniature dance floor, a cozy funk cocoon where groove replaces feathers. The Parisian artist leaves his mark once again, that of a warm pop that can be danced to horizontally or vertically, and that transforms laziness into an art of living.
Behind this Anglo-Saxon-sounding name hides Thibault Chevaillier, a self-taught French musician who dabbled in jazz and film concerts before finding his ideal playground. Raised on the Beatles and Pink Floyd, and trained by trumpeter Erik Truffaz, he traded the rigor of conservatories for the freedom of a home studio and a computer used as an instrument in its own right. From his past as a jazz musician, he retained an obsession with surprising harmonies; from Ed Mount, he made the vessel of his late-blooming coolness, crossing paths with Malik Djoudi, Halo Maud, and Ricky Hollywood within this demanding French pop scene that never shouts to be heard.
Ed Mount Turns His Bed into a Dance Floor with “In My Bed”
“In My Bed” continues the formula that makes him so successful: a kitschy yet elegant funk-pop, somewhere between the unabashed exuberance of Cameo, the mellow groove of Toro Y Moi, and the Californian influences of Steely Dan or Michael Franks, all sprinkled with the minimalist modernity of Benny Sings or Mild High Club. Satin keyboards, a bass that rolls along at a leisurely pace, a smooth voice that whispers more than it sings: the track is like a morning spent lounging under the covers with a blissful smile. This is precisely what the musician aims for: music that makes you feel like the sun is shining, even under the Parisian gloom.
We know the man’s consistency: from the EPs “Space Cries” and “Left My Heart” to the album “Close To Your Heart,” a collaboration with Flore Benguigui of L’Impératrice and Belgian artist David Numwami, each release confirms a unique universe, on the Nantes-based label Futur Records, home to Mou and Pégase. After a series of tracks that have graced our playlists—including “MARIAH,” which we’ve already featured here—”In My Bed” stands out as a new addition to Ed Mount’s wardrobe: comfortable, meticulously crafted, and impossible to take off once you’ve put it on.
At plusfm, this track is already getting airplay: it’s exactly the kind of cozy groove that warms up an electronic music playlist without ever dulling it. Tune in, turn up the volume, and settle comfortably into bed—until late into the night.
