Some tracks never die: they wait patiently by the pool. “LA Funky,” Destructo’s sun-drenched groove, is the perfect example. The American producer has unearthed it today, joined by the duo Oliver and, for the first time, his own vocals: Gary Richards takes the mic on this revisited version, released on his label All My Friends. It’s an elegant way to pay tribute to one of the most memorable summer bangers of the American electronic music scene—and to prove that a good groove never gets old.
Because behind Destructo lies one of the most influential figures in American dance music. Gary Richards has seen it all: the warehouse parties of Los Angeles in the early 1990s, his Sunday morning after-hours sessions, and then a detour into the record industry where Rick Rubin himself spotted him to head the electronic division of Def American. But his name remains most closely associated with HARD, the festival brand that launched HARD Summer, Day of the Dead, and the Holy Ship! cruise, and which played a major role in launching the careers of Deadmau5 and Justice across the Atlantic. Since then, he’s started from scratch with All My Friends, his record label and festival, without ever abandoning the turntables.
Destructo puts Los Angeles back on funky time with “LA Funky”
Facing him is Oliver, aka Vaughn “U-Tern” Oliver and Oliver “Oligee” Goldstein, a Los Angeles duo steeped in eighties boogie, early hip-hop, and French house. Discovered by A-Trak, and having played for Kitsuné and Fool’s Gold, the two have built a hybrid sound, both stubborn and danceable, reminiscent of Alex Metric and Dillon Francis. “LA Funky” is their most famous collaboration with their longtime mentor—Richards, who co-managed the duo in their early days, bringing their story full circle with this long-running feature.
The track itself hasn’t changed its DNA: a deep, rolling beat, sweet bass, a muscular nu-disco sound reminiscent of both French house and Californian G-funk, and that feeling of cruising in a convertible, windows down, on a sunny highway towards Los Angeles. The iconic video, directed by Kevin Kerslake, already showed Destructo and Oliver cruising through LA in a lowrider—it’s hard to get more true to the song. Gary Richards’ vocals add the finishing touch, like a captain taking the helm of his own ship.
At plusfm, this track is already getting heavy rotation: it’s exactly the kind of sunny groove that puts a smile on your face during the middle of a playlist. Plug in, roll down the window, turn up the volume, and drive off into the sunset — late into the night.
