This dive into the record collection of one of Berlin’s most iconic DJ/producer duos marks the 30th anniversary of German label !K7’s compilation series DJ-Kicks, which has featured some of the best DJs on the planet. It was high time for a volume from Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary’s group Modeselektor, known for their eclectic influences, ranging from punk to techno and hip-hop.
Instead of a club set, Bronsert and Szary have put together a mix better suited for listening in the car or at home.
The result is a diverse selection of 22 tracks kicked off by Moderat, the group Modeselektor forms alongside Sascha Ring aka Apparat – who makes an appearance on the album’s first tracks. Included in this collection is the excellent “Permit Riddim,” their highly-anticipated collab with Kitschkrieg – the Berlin producers behind the track “Standard,” which was a smash hit in Germany a few years back.
They alternate between almost beatless tracks (SZARY’s “PREY” and Aho Ssan’s “Hero Once Been”) and several gems perfect for sweating it out on the dancefloor (Kaan Pirecioglu – “Spellbound,” DJ Narciso – “10 Minutos,” PLUS ONE – “Bonk,” Chlär – “Populism Is Money”…) before finishing things off with the suave electronic stylings of their friend Siruismo (according to them, Berlin’s most underrated artist) on the magical “Koko.”
