Distracted—was that Thundercat’s state of mind since *It Is What It Is*, his last album released in 2020? With all the demands placed on the Californian bassist, a sought-after freelancer for Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington, Tyler, The Creator, and a two-time Grammy winner, in recent years, it’s understandable. But it was more than that: at 41, Stephen Bruner, who has given up alcohol and taken up boxing, explains that he has become a different person, and this album is the first reflection of that.
Thundercat – ThunderWave
An album that feels like a tribute to the laid-back Californian spirit, featuring high-profile guests, all immersed in the Sunshine State vibe that Thundercat knows so well: New Yorker A$AP Rocky is bathed in sunshine on Funny Friends, Channel Tres unfurls his warm timbre on This Thing We Call Love, while the light comes from another dimension on She Knows Too Much with the voice of Mac Miller, his friend who passed away in 2018 and with whom he formed an unparalleled creative partnership, as evidenced by their now-legendary concert behind the Tiny Desk. We also hear the Beach Boys on What Is Left to Say with The Lemon Twigs, and Thundercat revisits 5th Dimension-style Californian soul in a cosmic jazz version on Pozole and A.D.D. Through the Roof. An album to listen to very loudly in the middle of traffic jams.
