Few artists embody the spirit of Berlin techno quite like Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary, better known as Modeselektor. Growing up in the suburbs of East Berlin, the pair met on the schoolyard in the ’80s, instantly bonding over a shared musical vision. Armed with modest equipment, plenty of time, and access to the city’s abandoned industrial spaces, they quickly became fixtures of the burgeoning techno scene. Within a few years, they were touring the world as DJs with a relentless schedule, effectively writing the history of German electronic music.

Modeselektor – Blessed Speed

The goal of their new release, Classics Vol. 1 (We tried hard and failed again… enjoy!), is to honor this legacy. As the self-deprecating title suggests, the duo remains slightly wary of the “greatest hits” format. For longtime fans, the Modeselektor brand was built first on legendary parties in the sprawling (and then incredibly affordable) shared apartments of Berlin, and later on sophisticated live sets in the world’s most prestigious clubs.

Capturing the essence of a phenomenon like Modeselektor within a single record is a difficult task. Nevertheless, Bronsert and Szary felt compelled to revisit and reimagine these archival tracks, firing up their old computers to access session recordings dating back 20 years. To create something fresh for Classics Vol. 1, they deconstructed the original recordings and meticulously rebuilt them. In some cases, this involved a technical “spring cleaning,” as heard on “Kill Bill Vol.4 (CV1),” while on “Edgar,” the melody received a subtle yet significant overhaul. The result offers a new “serving suggestion” for dedicated followers and a perfect entry point into the expansive world of Modeselektor for newcomers. © Maren Schüller/Qobuz
