There are breakups you cry over, and others you dance to. Buscabulla has chosen the latter. The Puerto Rican duo delivers “Te Fuiste” (“You Left”), a cathartic single released via Domino, which heralds their second album, “Se Amaba Así.” This track proves, once again, that contemporary Latin music has nothing left to prove when it comes to danceable melancholy.
For those unfamiliar with Buscabulla: Raquel Berrios and Luis Del Valle, a couple both on and off stage, lived in Brooklyn for many years before returning to their native island—a return that already permeated “Regresa,” their debut album, acclaimed by NPR and Pitchfork and described as “joyful and melancholic.” This is precisely their signature sound: a retro, tropical electro-pop, blending silky synths, a touch of boogaloo, and ethereal vocals, which has even won over Bad Bunny, with whom they recorded the superb “Andrea.”
With “Te Fuiste,” the duo pushes their formula to the extreme. “We needed a high-energy track, something you could jump to,” explains Raquel Berrios. “The message is so cathartic that you almost have to dance to it to process the pain of losing the one you love.” They’ve succeeded: the song meanders, shifting with every bar, and culminates in a supernova of building synths, driven by irresistible dance rhythms. You’ll jump, you’ll cry, both at the same time.
Buscabulla Turns Pain into a Dance Floor with “Te Fuiste”
“Te Fuiste” is just a taste of “Se Amaba Así” — “Love, As It Was” — an album dedicated to the anatomy of modern love. Raquel and Luis delve into their own relationship history, drawing on every possible Latin musical style, from the neo-doo-wop of “Mi Marido” to the distorted guitars of “Mortal,” amidst dark synthesizers, bewitching vocal loops, and live percussion. Self-produced and refined with two-time Grammy winner Rich Costey (Muse, Foo Fighters), the album confirms a unique duo, impossible to categorize.
And the momentum shows no signs of slowing: after a successful US tour and appearances on major European stages, Buscabulla continues its impressive year with new projects and collaborations that are sure to generate buzz.
At plusfm, “Te Fuiste” is already getting airplay: it’s exactly the kind of track that adds vibrancy to an electronic music playlist, blending sunny grooves with emotional intensity. Tune in, turn up the volume, and dance—even if it hurts—until the wee hours.
