Sampha unveils “Cumulus / Memory,” a new track that is both fragile and luminous
Sampha returns with “Cumulus / Memory,” a new track that extends the sensitive and hushed atmosphere of his album Lahai. Released to mark the album’s second anniversary, the song was initially sketched out during the album sessions before being finalized later, over time. Co-written with Romy, who also contributes backing vocals, this new track confirms the London-based singer, producer, and songwriter’s ability to transform an unfinished idea into a spacious and deeply emotional piece.
At nearly seven minutes long, “Cumulus / Memory” remains true to Sampha’s style: a contemporary, delicate, and ethereal soul that unfolds in successive layers rather than through grand gestures. The track begins with a soft, almost vaporous atmosphere before gradually opening up to a broader and more immersive dynamic. This two-movement structure gives the track an inner journey dimension, a space between memory, serenity, and elevation.
Romy’s presence further reinforces this impression of an intimate dialogue. Her voice blends with Sampha’s without ever overpowering it, creating a subtle yet essential counterpoint. Together, they craft an atmosphere that is both tender and ethereal, where every detail seems designed to allow emotion to breathe. The result evokes a kind of ambient soul, where human warmth mingles with a very airy production.
With this release, Sampha reminds us that he remains one of the most singular voices on the current British scene. From Process to Lahai, he has built a body of work centered on intimacy, memory, and human connection. “Cumulus / Memory” fits perfectly within this trajectory: it is a transitional piece, poised between what has been left unfinished and what finally finds its definitive form.
At once understated, expansive, and moving, the track should appeal to listeners who appreciate nuanced productions and songs that take their time to unfold. Sampha once again confirms his rare talent for detail, restraint, and grace.
