From François de Roubaix to Vangelis, the sea has often been a privileged playground for synthesizer enthusiasts. Now it’s Rone’s turn to immerse his home studio in the deep blue, but in a way somewhat different from his illustrious predecessors. Conceived for Valentin Paoli’s documentary *The Whale and the Musician*, *Megaptera* (the scientific name for the humpback whale) was created in dialogue with biologists, bioacousticians, and marine specialists. Composed partly off the coast of Réunion Island and on the Breton coast, the album extends the musician’s recent evolution toward a practice less focused on performance and more on fieldwork.

And it poses the following question: how can we resonate with whales through music without harming the marine environment? *Megaptera* favors an immersive style based on repetition, frequency variations, and atmospheric textures. Inspired by research on cetacean vocalizations, Rone reduces his palette to minimalist motifs where synthesizers, sound recordings, and choral arrangements coexist harmoniously. It is this respect for and attentive listening to nature that constitutes the profound originality of Rone’s approach.
