A legendary group is back, and they’re doing things differently. The Avalanches unveil “Far Away,” a new single crafted with London-based rapper and poet John Glacier and producer and vocalist Khadija Al Hanafi. The fifth track from their highly anticipated album “No Bad Memories,” the song confirms that the Australians intend to remain the undisputed masters of sampling.

As a side note: formed in Melbourne, The Avalanches revolutionized electronic music with “Since I Left You,” a plunderphonic masterpiece built from thousands of vinyl samples. Twenty-six years later, Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi, and multi-instrumentalist Andy Szekeres—formerly of Midnight Juggernauts, for those in the know—continue their quest: to transform forgotten sonic fragments into collective raptures, somewhere between a DJ set and a hybrid concert.

The Avalanches Escape “Far Away” with John Glacier and Khadija Al Hanafi

“Far Away” is a shining example. Born from a London summer spent with John Glacier, the song captures, according to the band, “that lysergic, blissful feeling of the dusty evening light, listening to music with friends, as if we were living a shared dream.” The track delivers on this promise: Glacier’s nonchalant vocals and deadpan float above fiery percussion, while organic textures shimmer in the background. The trio collaborated on production with Khadija Al Hanafi, whose energy Robbie Chater describes as a lifesaver: “Her way of flipping a sample completely re-inspired me.” Collaborating with Khadija on this album has been a joy.

This single is part of an increasingly enticing series: after “Together” (with Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, and Prentiss), “Blue Shadows” (with Karen O), “Every Single Weekend” (with Jamie xx), and “Can’t Get Over Losing You” (with Portraits of Tracy), “Far Away” precedes a colossal album, boasting a plethora of guests ranging from Mike Patton to Panda Bear, including Rivers Cuomo and Carly Simon. This is sure to fuel anticipation for an album touted as a sprawling epic as their classics “Wildflower” and “We Will Always Love You.”

The band is also more active than ever on stage: a notable appearance at Primavera Sound in Barcelona, their very first concert in Mexico, dates announced in New York and London, and even a pop-up at Club 77 in Sydney. The stars seem to be definitively aligned for the grand return of the Melbourne wizards.

At plusfm, “Far Away” is already getting spins: it’s exactly the kind of sample-driven gem that elevates an electronic music playlist, somewhere between twilight groove and sun-drenched melancholy. Tune in, turn up the volume, and let yourself be carried away far, far away—until late into the night.
