For their fifth studio album, Jungle sticks to the formula that brought them success. Childhood friends and co-founders of the project, Joshua Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland, once again deploy their signature blend of sun-drenched grooves and the ethereal vocals of Lydia Kitto, now a permanent member of the group.

Jungle’s distinctive sound relies on a production that treats live-recorded instruments like samples, chopping, layering, and saturating them to create a cohesive and seamless disco-soul soundscape. The process is so convincing that one could easily believe Sunshine was built entirely from pre-existing samples.

The album opens with “Come Back To Me.” Driven by an irresistible groove, the track lets Kitto’s voice and lush harmonies float to a whistling solo that leads into the title track. The album’s highlight is undoubtedly “Someday, Somewhere,” where, unusually for Jungle, the group explores pain and loss. Its music video extends the contemporary choreography that has become one of the collective’s signatures. American rapper Bas appears on “Romeo II,” where his flow interacts with the group’s ethereal vocals and high-pitched vocal samples.

Blending house rhythms, soulful choirs, high-energy music videos, and sounds inherited from 1970s soul, Sunshine may not reinvent the wheel. But with this new collection of irresistible songs, Jungle continues to hit the mark.
